Case Study 2:

Ford EcoBoost – Oil Light Issue and Timing Belt Failure

Overview:
Ford EcoBoost engines are well-known for their performance and efficiency. However, a recurring issue with these engines involves the oil light illuminating unexpectedly. At Bermondsey Mechanics, we recently encountered this problem multiple times, with five vehicles experiencing this issue in the span of just one week. Three of these vehicles required complete engine swaps due to severe damage caused by a malfunctioning timing belt. This case study highlights the underlying causes, the consequences of ignoring the issue and the importance of timely intervention.

The Problem:
The oil light coming on in Ford EcoBoost engines is a known issue that many owners face. It typically signals a loss of oil pressure, which, in the case of these engines, can be traced back to a critical timing belt issue. Specifically, the timing belt on these engines tends to jump a tooth. When this happens, the timing is thrown off, leading to a chain of problems, including engine misfires, loss of oil pressure and, in some cases, catastrophic engine damage.

Ford EcoBoost – Oil Light Issue and Timing Belt Failure

In this particular instance, a Ford EcoBoost vehicle arrived at Bermondsey Mechanics with the oil light on. Upon inspection, we discovered that the timing belt had indeed jumped a tooth, causing the teeth on the belt to break off. This misalignment led to severe internal engine damage, resulting in the need for a complete engine replacement.

  • Root Cause: The timing belt failure was the result of the belt jumping a tooth, which caused the timing to go out of sync. This misalignment resulted in several critical issues:

  • Oil Pressure Loss: The misalignment affected the oil pump, which failed to maintain proper oil pressure within the engine.

  • Timing Issues: The engine's valves and pistons were no longer synchronised, leading to internal friction and further damage.

  • Component Damage: As a result of the timing being off, the teeth on the timing belt broke, causing further damage to the engine’s internal components.

Consequences of Ignoring the Issue: If left unchecked, a timing belt issue can lead to much more serious consequences, including:

  • Severe Engine Damage: The misalignment can cause the engine to run inefficiently, which can result in overheating, damaged valves, pistons and other internal components. In extreme cases, the engine can fail completely.

  • Complete Engine Failure: In three out of the five vehicles we serviced recently, the extent of the damage was so severe that it necessitated a full engine replacement.

  • Increased Repair Costs: Delaying repairs or ignoring the oil light can result in much higher repair costs in the long run due to the need for more extensive work or a complete engine replacement.

Solution:

At Bermondsey Mechanics, we have extensive experience with the Ford EcoBoost engine and its common issues, including the timing belt jumping a tooth. For the vehicle in this case study, the following steps were taken:

  • Comprehensive Inspection: We conducted a thorough inspection to confirm that the timing belt had jumped a tooth, causing the oil light to come on and the internal engine components to be damaged.

  • Timing Belt Replacement: We replaced the damaged timing belt, ensuring it was properly aligned to avoid any further issues.

  • Engine Repair/Replacement: In this case, the damage was extensive enough to require a complete engine swap. The damaged engine was replaced with a reconditioned unit, ensuring the vehicle ran smoothly and efficiently.

  • Oil System Check: After addressing the timing belt issue, we checked the oil system to ensure that the oil pump was functioning correctly and that the oil pressure was restored to optimal levels.

Outcome: By addressing the timing belt issue promptly, we were able to prevent further damage to the vehicle and restore it to optimal working condition. However, the extent of the damage was such that a complete engine replacement was necessary to ensure long-term reliability. The customer was able to drive away with peace of mind, knowing that their vehicle had been thoroughly repaired and restored.

Lessons Learned: Timely Intervention is Crucial: The timing belt issue in Ford EcoBoost engines is a known problem that, if not addressed promptly, can lead to significant and costly damage. Regular maintenance and timely intervention are essential to avoid the need for complete engine replacements.

  • Oil Light is a Warning Sign: If the oil light comes on, it's critical to have the vehicle inspected immediately. Ignoring the light or postponing repairs can result in much more severe engine damage, as seen in this case study.

  • Expert Care is Key: At Bermondsey Mechanics, we have the expertise and experience to diagnose and resolve timing belt issues effectively. Whether it’s a simple repair or a complete engine swap, we ensure our customers receive the highest quality service and solutions.
